The Kennecott Copper Mine, also known as the Bingham Canyon Mine, is one of the largest and most famous open-pit copper mines in the world. Located near Salt Lake City, Utah, it has been in operation since 1906 and is owned by Rio Tinto Group. The mine is about 2.75 miles wide and over 3,000 feet deep, making it one of the largest man-made excavations on Earth.

The mine primarily produces copper but also extracts gold, silver, molybdenum, and other valuable minerals. Over the years, Kennecott has contributed significantly to global copper production. It has also faced environmental challenges due to the scale of its operations, leading to efforts to manage waste and reduce environmental impact.

Kennecott's history is a key part of Utah's industrial development and mining history, making it a prominent landmark and a major contributor to the global copper industry.
